A custom website for a Cape Breton veterinary acupuncture practice — warm and authoritative, built to welcome and convert.
The brief
Dr. Michelle Elgersma is a Fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture and an IVAS board member and TA Coordinator with over 25 years of experience — from farm animals in rural Ontario to elite thoroughbred racehorses. Looking to reestablish Kalmeren Veterinary Acupuncture in Cape Breton, she needed a website that matched her clinical authority and communicated the warmth and individualized care that defines her practice.
The site needed to clearly explain what veterinary acupuncture is, establish credibility quickly, showcase the range of animals treated, and make booking an appointment as frictionless as possible.
Nature-inspired design
A deep forest green palette drawn from the Cape Breton landscape sets a calm, trustworthy tone. Warm gold accents carry energy without disrupting the sense of care and professionalism. The colours work as hard as the content.
Photography-forward layout
Full-bleed hero photography and image-led service cards draw visitors in immediately. The site leads with animals and emotion, not with text walls — creating an immediate sense of the practice before a single word is read.
Services, clearly presented
Acupuncture, osteopathy, and complementary therapies are each given dedicated pages that explain what they are, what conditions they address, and what a patient's experience looks like — answering the questions a first-time client actually has.
Practitioner credibility
Dr. Michelle's credentials, affiliations (CVMA, IVAS), and career story are prominently featured. For a practice built on trust and expertise, establishing that a seasoned professional is behind the service is essential to converting a visitor into a client.
Responsive throughout
Built on Bootstrap 5 with a fully responsive layout, the site works equally well on a phone in a barn or a desktop in an office. Navigation, service cards, and the appointment path are all touch-friendly and legible at every screen size.
Privacy-respecting analytics
In-house-hosted Umami analytics give the practice insight into which pages and services visitors engage with — without sending data to third parties or requiring cookie consent banners.
Design at a glance
Typography
Lora serif for headings gives warmth and editorial weight. Noto Sans Display in light weight keeps body text clean and effortless to read. The pairing balances tradition with openness.
Colour
Deep green body (#325748), near-black overlays for the nav, and warm gold accents (#b8916a). Beige tones for section backgrounds keep the palette grounded without feeling stark.
Technology
PHP with Bootstrap 5, Google Fonts, self-hosted Umami analytics, and a bespoke CSS layer for components not covered by the framework. No CMS dependency.
